Mayor and City Council

The City of Centerville operates under an aldermanic form of government consisting of a mayor and six council members. Council members are elected from three wards in the city and the Mayor is elected at-large. Mayors of Beresford serve two-year terms, while Council members serve staggered two-year terms with elections conducted every April.

Council Meetings


The Centerville City Council meets on the 1st Monday of each month. Meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. and are held at CITY HALL 741 Main St.

WARDS - Ordinance No. 2021-12

Wards.  The City shall be divided into three wards and shall be designated respectively as the First, Second and Third Wards.  The wards shall be described by stating the certain street or avenue designations or other landmarks that divide and border the wards.  Any reference to street or avenue below shall mean an imaginary line running down the approximate middle of each street or avenue.  The wards of the City of Centerville are as set forth below and on the map thereof on file in the office of the Finance Officer.  Any discrepancies shall be resolved by reference to the map rather than the physical descriptions set forth herein.  

The First Ward shall include all of that part of the City east of Broadway Street/South Dakota Highway 19A and north of Vermillion Street.  It shall also include all of that part of the City north of Main Street lying in between Broadway Street/South Dakota Highway 19A and Coleman Street.

The Second Ward shall include all of that part of the City east of Broadway Street/South Dakota Highway 19A and south of Main Street.  It shall also include all of that part of the City east of Coleman Street and south of Vermillion Street.  It shall also include all of the area west of Broadway Street/South Dakota Highway 19A bounded by 295 Street on the south, Nebraska Street on the west, Garfield Street and Railroad Street on the north.

 The Third Ward shall include all of that part of the City west of Broadway Street/South Dakota Highway 19A. Except that area in The Second Ward that is west of Broadway Street/South Dakota Highway 19A bounded by 295 Street on the south, Nebraska Street on the west, Garfield Street and Railroad Street on the north.

 

NOTICE OF DEADLINE FOR VOTER REGISTRATION

     Voter registration for the City of Centerville Municipal Election to be held on April 9, 2024, will close on March 25, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. Failure to register by this date will cause forfeiture of voting rights for this election. If you are in doubt about whether you are registered, check the Voter Information Portal at www.sdsos.gov or call the county auditor at (605) 297-3153

          Registration may be completed during regular business hours at the county auditor's office, municipal finance office, secretary of state's office, and those locations which provide driver's licenses, SNAP, TANF, WIC, military recruitment, and assistance to the disabled as provided by the Department of Human Services. You may contact the county auditor to request a mail-in registration form or access a mail-in form at (www.sdsos.gov or https://sdsos.gov/elections-voting/voting/register-to-vote/default.aspx).

           Any voter who needs assistance, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may contact the county auditor for information and special assistance in voter registration.
